Wiggles to Wellness: 6 Ways to Help Kids Recover After Tooth Extractions

Whether it’s a stubborn baby tooth or a permanent one removed for braces, tooth extractions can feel frightening for kids. However, the procedure is relatively quick and painless. The real work begins during the recovery process, and as a parent, you have an important part to play. With the right care, your child’s mouth can heal quickly and comfortably. Keep reading to find six simple ways to help your child bounce back after a tooth extraction.

1. Follow Their Dentist’s Aftercare Instructions

The most important thing you can do, especially at the beginning of your child’s recovery, is follow their dentist’s instructions. They will give you specific aftercare guidelines that will keep your child’s mouth healthy as they heal. Stick closely to these directions and you’ll stay ahead of the game.

2. Manage Pain and Swelling

A little soreness after a tooth extraction is perfectly normal, but it can be uncomfortable for your child. To help them soothe the ache, you can use children’s pain relievers as directed or apply a cold compress to the outside of their cheek. For the compress, be sure to only apply it in 10-to-15-minute intervals to keep your child’s skin from becoming irritated.

3. Watch Their Diet

After extraction, soft, cool foods are best for the first couple of days. Great options could be applesauce, yogurt, or mashed potatoes. Avoid crunchy snacks, hot foods, and straws, as these can irritate the extraction site or dislodge the healing blood clot.

4. Encourage Rest

Remind your child to take it easy for the first day. Too much running, jumping, or sports can cause bleeding and delay healing. A cozy movie night followed by a favorite book is a great way to help them relax so they can recover properly.

5. Gently Clean Their Mouth

Oral care is still important, but it’s important to be gentle around the extraction site. Have your child brush and floss their other teeth as usual, but tell them to avoid the area where the tooth is missing.

6. Stay Vigilant for Signs of Trouble

Most kids recover quickly, but you’ll need to watch for signs like persistent bleeding, severe pain, fever, or worsening swelling. If you notice these issues, call their dentist right away. Early treatment can prevent complications and keep your child comfortable.

Helping your little one recover from a tooth extraction doesn’t have to be stressful. With these six tips, you can ease their discomfort and support them as they bravely heal. When in doubt, call their dentist for guidance. A little care goes a long way in protecting your child’s smile.
