Orthodontics has allowed millions of people to achieve a healthier, prettier smile by straightening their teeth. While the results can reduce aches and pains, make teeth easier to clean, and allow a patient to chew food more thoroughly, orthodontic treatments involve a significant amount of effort on the part of the patient. While some people might be better off with traditional braces, Invisalign clear aligners can be a great choice for others. Here are a few of the advantages and disadvantages of these orthodontic treatments and a few tips for deciding which is right for you.

What’s So Great About Metal Braces?

Traditional metal braces are a tried-and-true method with a proven record of beautifully realigned smiles. For traditional braces, metal brackets are cemented to each tooth before wires are attached to each of them. These wires will provide the tension that will move the patient’s teeth into better positions over the course of the treatment. Traditional braces are irremovable, which can be an advantage for patients that have difficulty keeping track of things, and they can be used to treat even the most complex orthodontic cases.

What Makes Invisalign Such an Excellent Option?

Invisalign allows a patient to realign their smile using virtually invisible clear aligners without worrying about the dietary restrictions that come with traditional braces. Invisalign involves taking a 3D map of the patient’s teeth to provide the data necessary to make a customized sequence of dental trays. Each tray in the sequence is designed to fit the patient’s teeth while moving them into slightly better alignment. Invisalign clear aligners are to be removed for eating and oral hygiene, but must be worn for twenty to twenty-two hours every day.

Which Option Is Right for Me?

Traditional braces can treat complex orthodontic cases that Invisalign cannot. However, treatment can last for a significantly longer time and comes and requires the patient to avoid crunchy and chewy foods that could harm or dislodge the braces. Invisalign is a popular choice for adults with minor alignment issues, but some patients may have difficulty with losing their aligners after removing them.

In any case, orthodontic treatment can realign a smile into a healthier and prettier shape. Consulting with your orthodontist can help determine which method is the best for you.
