Can I Still Get Cavities While Wearing Invisalign?

Lady thinks something over

Invisalign has allowed many patients to enjoy an orthodontic treatment that doesn’t involve the clearly visible metal parts and dietary requirements that come with traditional braces. The process works by having the patient wear a series of clear aligners that straighten their teeth out over time. While these aligners might seem like a protective shield for your smile, the truth is that you can still get cavities while wearing them. Here’s how cavities can develop while wearing Invisalign, how to prevent that from happening, and what to do if you notice any forming.

How Can Cavities Develop When I’m Wearing Invisalign?

Invisalign clear aligners must be removed whenever the patient eats or drinks anything besides water, and the teeth and aligners must be thoroughly cleaned before they are put back together. If the patient eats while wearing their aligners or doesn’t clean them or their teeth properly before putting them back in place, food can get caught between the teeth and the aligners. The aligners will protect the food particles from the mouth’s natural cleaning process, allowing bacteria to multiply rapidly and excrete enamel-eroding acid. If this is allowed to continue, the teeth will eventually develop cavities.

How Can I Prevent Cavities from Forming While Wearing Invisalign?

The good news is that you can prevent cavities from forming by practicing excellent oral hygiene and keeping your aligners clean. Rinse your aligners off whenever you remove them and keep them in a protective travel case. After eating, wait at least thirty minutes before brushing and flossing to eliminate any lingering food debris and sugary residue. Brush and rinse off your Invisalign trays before putting them back on your teeth as well. This will prevent food debris from getting trapped between your aligners and your teeth.

What Should I Do If I Notice Cavities While I Am Wearing Invisalign?

Any cavities that develop while you are undergoing Invisalign treatment will have to be resolved for the process to continue. Your dentist will have to remove the decayed dental tissue and place an appropriate restoration like a filling or dental crown. This may result in some soreness or discomfort in the days afterward, but this can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

Invisalign can straighten a smile without any issues with tooth decay if the patient practices proper hygiene during the process. By following your orthodontist’s instructions, you can secure the best possible result from your treatment.
