What Happens During Implant Surgery?

After placement, the implant gradually bonds with the surrounding bone through a process called osseointegration. This creates a stable foundation for your replacement tooth. Healing can take several months, depending on your individual circumstances.
Once the implant has adequately healed, your dentist can attach an abutment and place your final restoration.
Will I Need Additional Procedures?
Not everyone can move directly to implant placement. Your dentist will evaluate your teeth, gums, and supporting bone to determine whether you’re a good candidate.
Some patients may need a bone graft if they don’t have enough bone to adequately support an implant. A tooth extraction may also be necessary if a damaged or unhealthy tooth is still present. These additional procedures can affect the overall timeline.

What Is Recovery Like?
You may experience some swelling, tenderness, or minor bleeding after implant surgery. These symptoms are generally temporary, and your dental team will provide instructions for caring for the surgical site while it heals.
Following those instructions is important. You may need to stick with softer foods temporarily, avoid certain activities, and keep the area clean according to your dentist’s recommendations.
